The 2020 ECG Research Award, sponsored by bredent, was attributed to a study presented by Dr Andrianna Bousiou from the Department of Prosthodontics of the School of Dentistry of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Greece, with the topic: “Oral factors and adherence to the Mediterranean diet in an older Greek population”.

The study investigated the effect of sociomedical and oral factors, such as chewing efficiency recorded by a two-colour chewing gum, xerostomia, use of dentures, number of natural teeth and number of chewing contacts on the adherence to the Mediterranean diet recorded by the MDI_BNC4H index, in an older community-dwelling Greek population. The findings indicated that better chewing efficiency is an independent predictor of high adherence to the Mediterranean Diet.

The research team consisted of Dr Andrianna Bousiou, Prof. Anastassia Kossioni, Prof. Argy Polychronopoulou and Prof. Demetrios Halazonetis from the School of Dentistry of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Greece; Prof. Martin Schimmel from the School of Dental Medicine, University of Bern, Switzerland; and Prof. Antonia Trichopoulou, Ms Georgia Martimianaki, and Ms Eleni Peppa from the Hellenic Health Foundation, Athens, Greece.
